Cruel Intentions TV Show Changed The 1999 Movie's Best Character (& Actually Made It Better) (2024)

Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions TV show borrowed the premise from the 1999 movie and modernized its main characters, and it made big changes to the movie’s best character, but these made it even better. After a failed prequel and sequel, Cruel Intentions returned but now as a TV show. The Cruel Intentions TV show isn’t a remake of the movie nor a sequel, but it does take the same premise and the essence of its main characters is the same: wealthy step-siblings who make a bet involving an innocent student.

The Cruel Intentions TV show follows Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), who make a bet to get Lucien to sleep with the Vice President’s daughter, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), so Caroline can get her to join her sorority. Accompanying Caroline is CeCe (Sara Silva), her best friend and also a member of the Delta Phi sorority. CeCe isn’t an original character as she’s a new version of the best character from the movie, with many changes that actually improved her.

The main characters in the Cruel Intentions TV show are all modern versions of the ones in the movie, and some went through bigger changes than others. Such is the case for Cecile, played by Selma Blair in the movie, a new student who Kathryn takes under her wing, but not because she has a good heart. Cecile is the new girlfriend of Kathryn's ex-boyfriend, who left her due to her promiscuity, so she plans her revenge using Cecile – and as Cecile is very naive and malleable, Kathryn’s revenge plan goes smoothly.

In the Cruel Intentions TV show, CeCe isn’t a target of Caroline at first, but becomes one as the series progresses. CeCe is Caroline’s best friend and her right hand at the sorority. CeCe is chronically stressed as she's always making sure everything at Delta Phi goes smoothly and Caroline has nothing to worry about, but on top of that, she takes a job as Professor Chadwick's (Sean Patrick Thomas) assistant. CeCe ends up developing feelings for Chadwick and they’re mutual, but to Caroline, her position as TA is a distraction and CeCe is being disloyal.

Prime Video's Cruel Intentions TV show borrows the premise of the 1999 movie with some changes and a new cast, along with an actor from the movie.

CeCe is naive but not in the same way as Cecile. The latter even falls into childish territory, while CeCe is very mature, but her anxiety over doing everything and doing it perfectly leads her to not see the bigger picture, and Caroline takes full advantage of that. At the end of the Cruel Intentions TV show, CeCe starts to realize Caroline’s lies, and she’s more likely to do something about it, while in the movie, it’s not until Cecile has access to Sebastian’s journal thanks to Annette that she learns of Kathryn’s horrible actions.

Despite being confirmed to exist in the same universe, the Cruel Intentions TV show doesn’t feature any characters from the movie and only has one actor from the movie (Sean Patrick Thomas). However, Selma Blair has expressed her interest in playing Cecile in the Cruel Intentions TV show in a cameo appearance (via Variety), but the showrunners don’t want to do this type of cameos just because. In an interview with EW, showrunner Sara Goodman said they’re not going to do “stunt casting”, but if there’s a place for Cecile in the show, they will consider it.

Prime Video's Cruel Intentions TV show borrowed the premise of the 1999 movie of the same name, but it also made some big changes to it.

It’s hard to say what Cecile’s place in the Cruel Intentions TV show could be, as it’s unknown what she could be up to over 20 years after the events of the movie. There’s also the connection between the movie, the TV show, and the Merteuils, so it’s even trickier to bring Cecile back without acknowledging how strangely similar the events around her are to those she went through in high school with Kathryn and Sebastian.
